Alrighties, I have told Rhaps-i-pie about these ideas and maybe, everyone else might have a few ideas to add too? I dunno
Plus, this board looked naked.. Cover yourself! anyways. These ideas are mainly for the horse side, sorry wolfys, you'll get some ideas too.
Role of lead mare
The lead mare, yeah, most people think. So what? oooh its Queen! Make me it!.. Er, yeah. But the rank comes with responsibilites. A lead mare, is often middle-aged and highly knowledgable about finding food, shelter and water. Yes, she would be able to fight and all. But, fighting isn't the biggest deal either. She disciplines the foals and younger horses, decides when to move on and generally acts like the stallion, when he is not around. (minus the sexual intercourse) and attacks predators. Also, she leads the herd when they move on, guarding the front.
Beta Mare?
Next in line, often assists. Although, only with the super large herds.
Role of the stallion
Keep the mares at the front moving, protection and sperm bank. He also needs to make sure that he has enough territory, with food, shelter and water. And, of course to protect from predators. Staying at the back, to protect the flanks from attacks and to drive the mares on.
Herd bonding
Ok, not all the horses in a herd want to embrace each other. But, many of them have friendships and send time, grooming and talking to each other. And, horses don't like being by themselves either. Especially, in the wild e.g they would be eaten. Anyway, horses like each other and prefer to be around other horses if posisble. e.g more ears and eyes to look for predators
